The Start of a New Garden Year

It’s garlic planting time. In a way this first planting for next year’s garden has the feel of the start of a new year. The soil is already cool, and I wonder how it is that garlic thrives underground in the cool soil, sending out thick, white roots deep into the ground.

The ducks have a feast with all the worms and bugs my weeding exposes. The thick carpet of mulch that blankets the freshly planted garlic is a treasure trove of bugs and worms for them too.
