Yesterday was the solstice and now we are on the other side with the days getting shorter. It always seem too soon. The days should stay long at least through August, but that is not the way it works.
It’s time to bag the developing Asian pears, 梨, so I spent a quiet solstice afternoon thinning and bagging the developing fruit. Maybe that will become a solstice tradition. The bags worked so well last year that this year I bagged every single one that remained after thinning them, 90 bagged pears in all. I thin them aggressively, leaving just one pear per inflorescence. I ran out of the pear specific bags and used bags for apples too. The bags for apples are somewhat translucent, so it will be interesting to see how the pears do in them.
